About the Birkdale Community

Once thought of as a 'Cinderella' suburb sitting snugly next to her big sister Birkenhead, Birkdale on Auckland's North Shore has come into it's own over the past few years. Frustrated home buyers, priced out of other areas are discovering what fiercely loyal Birkdale residents have known for decades... that this quietly evolving suburb offers a desirable choice of living options on a par with more expensive areas but at a distinctly more affordable level. Properties range from traditional Kiwi 1/4 acre sections in friendly established cul-de-sacs, through to quality architectural homes tucked away in gorgeous bush or coastal settings.

Birkdale began as a semi-rural area made up of strawberry fields and small holdings. If you know where to look, tucked away here and there around the streets are surviving late 1800s cottages, and the occasional early 1900s villa. Much of Birkdale's housing was from planned suburban growth expanding the neighbourhood in the 1950s and 1960s, resulting in the area having a reassuringly high proportion of traditionally constructed weatherboard or brick family homes.

Birkdale (roughly known as the area from Verran's Corner through to Mariners Cove on the southwestern side, over to Eskdale Road on the northeastern side) has retained a welcome connection with nature through numerous parks, reserves, and readily accessible bush and coastal walks. There are a number of schools in the area ranging from primary through to secondary level.

Eating

Enjoy fine cuisine at Verbena Restaurant and Bar, relaxed dining at Fernz Restaurant, or casual cafe fare at Verrans Cafe - all well regarded, and handily situated on the roundabout at Rangatira and Birkdale Roads in Verrans Corner.

There are great takeaways all around the area, and the many cafes, bars, and restaurants of Birkenhead are only a few minutes away.

Shopping

While the area has its share of neighbourhood corner shops, Birkdale is just minutes from Westfield Glenfield and Highbury.

Transport

The area is serviced by an iconic local bus company - Birkenhead Transport - which has been in operation since 1933 and is based in Birkdale at Verrans Corner. The bus service runs locally, to various schools, and into the city.

Taxi services also cover the area, and it is a short drive to motorway access via Birkenhead or Northcote onramps.
