Presenting Your Home at its Best

A house that looks it’s best, on the day has a better chance of selling or reaching a higher price.

Here are some suggestions to help you prepare for your open home:

  • De-personalise – pack away your personal photographs and family heirlooms. You want buyers to imagine their own photos on the wall and say "I can see myself living here!" – make it easy for them to imagine their dreams in your house.
  • Clean! Get into all of the corners, scrub around the taps and make those windows sparkle to create an impression of a well cared for home. Make your house sparkle!
  • Lighten up  – Create the impression of space and brightness by turning on the lights during open homes. On a sunny day make sure the curtains are open too.
  • De-clutter – less is more. Tuck away ornaments and accessories that make the house feel cluttered (think of it as a head start on the packing you will eventually do anyway). Clean off everything on the kitchen counters. Put essential daily-used items in a small box that can be stored in a closet when not in use.
  • Update and make minor repairs – A simple update like painting walls, fixing small holes and replacing bench tops can make a big difference without costing too much.  Minor repairs can make a big difference on the day – the house is ready to be lived in.
  • Street appeal - The front entrance is where potential buyers will make a decision about whether to enter or not. Make sure the outside of your home is well kept, tidy and clean. Consider putting a beautiful, flowering plant by the front door to make your home look even more inviting.
  • Remove and replace favourite items you want to take with you – do this before the open home.
  • Rearrange bedroom closets and kitchen cabinets – buyers WILL open closet and cabinet doors. If everything is organised, the buyer will think you take very good care of the rest of the house too.
  • Home Staging – Consider using a specialist company to make your house look the best it can. Capture more buyers by hiring a professional home stager to bring your home alive.
