Doug has a deep understanding of the local community having moved from Auckland to a sheep and cattle farm in Helensville in his early teens. He has lived, worked and owned various successful businesses there over the last 35 years. Doug has been very involved in the local Scout and Venturer Group, Athletic Club and Rugby Club. He has also been a director of his own company, a very successful manufacturing business.

Doug is keenly interested in fishing, diving and keeping fit. Rugby has always played an important part of his life – a player in the past for Helensville, as a spectator and as a North Harbour Referee up to Club Senior A level. He has also achieved well in Touch Rugby as a player representing North Harbour in the Masters grade and as a Referee, representing New Zealand in the Masters World Cup in Australia in 1997.
