Sold to Gold winners

Jerome Wu and Liany Lay are announced as the winners of the Barfoot & Thompson Sold to Gold competition.

When Jerome Wu and Liany Lay listed their Howick home for auction with Barfoot & Thompson earlier this year, they did not expect to win the Sold to Gold competition grand prize - flights, accommodation, and tickets for two to various events (including the Opening Ceremony) at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“It was an incredible surprise - we were not expecting it at all,” says Jerome. “When our agent Kevin Qian rang me with the news, he was more excited than I was. It was only starting to sink in for me!”

Jerome immigrated to New Zealand from China in 1995, while Liany is of Indonesian descent and has been living in the country since 1993. The couple met in Auckland and have three children aged six, nine and eleven.

Liany adds, “my first thought was our children, and so I asked to delay our acceptance while we organised childcare.” Thankfully, Liany’s parents will be accommodating the kids while the couple go to Rio.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” says Jerome. “We would never have planned it for ourselves as it would have been beyond our budget to take our entire family. It’s the perfect excuse for Liany and I to do something together - just for us.”

It will be Jerome and Liany’s first trip to South America, and they are most looking forward to the Opening Ceremony and watching the equestrian event in particular. The couple will also be taking a half-day city tour in Buenos Aires, Argentina, included in the prize.

The couple sold their Howick property in May and have already purchased their new home in Clevedon. “The whole process was great. Kevin was a very good agent and we were very happy with the outcome.” Settlement will be at the end of July, just weeks before they depart for Rio.

“A new home and a dream holiday - things have worked out very well for us.”
