The Healthy Homes questions our tenants keep asking - answered.
Heating that does the job. Ventilation that clears the steam. Fewer unwanted draughts making their way in. The Healthy Homes standards are there to make your rental warmer, drier and better to live in. So, what does keeping it that way involve? Here are three questions that keep coming up.
Q1. How often is Healthy Homes compliance checked?
There is no set timetable for repeating a full Healthy Homes assessment. Instead, key components are checked during routine inspections and at the end of a tenancy. If something needs a closer look, a specialist assessment may be recommended.
Your landlord is responsible for making sure your home meets the standards and continues to do so. As your property manager, we support them with routine inspections, maintenance checks and follow-up when something needs attention.
Q2. What should I do between inspections?
You play a part too. Because you live there every day, you may be the first to notice a change. Use the heating and ventilation provided, clean the rangehood filters as needed and let us know if something is damaged or stops working. That could be a heater or extractor fan, a leak, dampness or mould, overflowing gutters or a new draught. You don’t need to diagnose the problem. Tell us what you have noticed and include photos if they are helpful.
Q3. What happens after I report something?
We’ll look into the issue and work out what needs to happen next. It may be a straightforward maintenance job or something requiring specialist input. If dampness or mould appears, the cause may be the property, how the home is being used or both. We’ll investigate rather than assume, arrange the appropriate next step and keep you updated.
The Healthy Homes standards are there for your benefit – and so are we. If something in your rental doesn’t seem right, or you’re unsure, talk to your Barfoot & Thompson property manager. We’ll listen, look into it and help get it sorted.
