About Don Mackay

Don Mackay is one of the team working out of the Barfoot & Thompson Albany Office, specialising in the sale and purchase of residential property across Auckland’s North Shore. Working from Orewa to Northcote, Stillwater to Paremoremo and Milford to Massey.

Born and educated in Wellington, Don and his family have lived on the North Shore, since moving to Auckland.

He has a good eye, and lots of experience. He understands the building process, and the real estate market, particularly on the North Shore. His experience involves project managing the construction of four new builds and extensively renovating two other properties himself.

Before real estate, Don had an extensive career in advertising in both Wellington and Auckland. He was involved in all aspects of the business, including media, client service and agency management.

He has a Diploma in Advanced Marketing Management from Victoria University & [IMI].

During his time in advertising, Don was responsible for the planning, strategy and implementation of multi-million dollar ad budgets. He has worked on some of New Zealand's more recognisable brands, including Hannah’s, Cerebos Greggs, Masport, Parfum Yves Saint Laurent, NZ Post Bank & Philatelic, Sanitarium, Auckland SPCA, Lion Nathan, Super Liquor Retail, NZI, Babich Wines, Dive HQ, and Fiji Tourism, Polynesian Airlines, Sodastream and Radius Care.

Outside of work and when time permits, he enjoys a round of golf with his friends. Don also looks for personal projects to work on and has undertaken a complete re-build of a 1980’s Mazda Ute. He built himself a steel trailer, restored a small compressor and outdoor furniture.

My daughter and I were tasked with the job of arranging the sale of my son’s rental property in Widdison Place, The Landing, Albany, a property he had owned since 2012 which had been lying vacant for three months as a result of the Corona Virus outbreak.

At the time, my son was living in Bogota, Columbia under “Level 4” Covid 19 “Lockdown” conditions, unable to leave his apartment. Because of this, plus the distance and the time zone differences, we thought the sales process might turn out to be something of a challenge, to put it mildly.

As part of our Agency evaluation, my daughter contacted Don Mackay at Barfoot & Thompson, Albany, about handling the sale for us. A couple of days after our initial contact with Don and even before we had an Agency Agreement with Barfoot & Thompson, Don made contact with my daughter to tell her he had discussed the property with one of his office colleagues and said he had a “potential buyer” for the property – but in the event, he actually did have a buyer!.

From this point on, things moved rather quickly. My son emailed the signed Agency Agreement back to Don on Friday at about 1:00pm. By 3:00pm. the same day, we had “an offer on the table” from Danielle’s Buyer.

Don was totally in control of the process all the way through - keeping us “in the loop” with any developments as they occurred, either by email and/or text or phone calls.

We are very happy with the price Don negotiated for us. It was certainly more than we were expecting and it was all completed before the “For Sale” sign even went up outside the house. Which meant, we also saved thousands on the staging and marketing costs $$$$$.

I have to say, if you’re looking for someone to handle the sale of your property who has absolute integrity and is completely trustworthy at all times, Don is the man.

Finally, I have no hesitation recommending Don to any homeowner thinking about selling their property.

I expressed my interest in Lucas Point townhouse complex and the position in the complex where I’d ideally like to live. Don did a lot of homework and footwork and managed to secure a townhouse in Lucas Point. Thinking I could only acquire three bedrooms, Don managed to secure a four-bedroom townhouse that was perfect for my family. Don Mackay introduced us to the property market when we sold our family home after 35 years. We contacted Don because of his experience in the area and in the price bracket we anticipated we would be in. Selling our family home was our first experience in the Auckland property market so as we were dealing with our biggest asset it was essential we felt confident with the person we were dealing with.
